car engine maintenanceIf you properly maintain your vehicle, it should last for several years to come. Here are some tips to help prolong the life of your engine.

Oil Changes

Motor oil is the most important fluid that flows throughout your engine. If you neglect to change the oil on a regular basis, contaminants will begin to build up inside of the engine. In severe cases, the engine could even be totally destroyed. The car owner’s manual is the best source for the recommended oil change interval. Not only does motor oil lubricate the vital engine parts, it also helps to keep the engine cool. You should never allow the oil level to go below a quart low.

Keep Engine Cool

Make it a habit to routinely glance at the engine temperature gauge. If a vehicle is allowed to run hot, the engine could be critically damaged. Make sure that the coolant hoses are not old and worn out. You should always use the recommended coolant, never water only. Also, faulty thermostats and radiator fans should be promptly replaced.

Spark Plugs Wires

Worn out spark plugs and ignition wires can cause a vehicle’s engine performance to dramatically decrease. If your vehicle is running rough or hard to crank, the spark plugs could be the culprit. Some car owners make the mistake of using the incorrect spark plugs. Some cars require copper plugs, while others need platinum plugs.

Never Ignore the Check Engine Light

If the Check Engine Light becomes illuminated, this means that there is a problem. Ignoring the light could be a very costly mistake. Although the problem could be as simple as a loose gas cap, you should always take a Check Engine Light seriously.
